June 11, 2008 -- NY Council Albany Visit

On Wednesday, June 11th a group of NRDC NY Council members took the train to Albany and met with a number of senators and assemblymen. Our main goal: lobby in support of tire efficiency, net-metering and electronic waste disposal. Our timely visit provided an inside perspective on how Albany works. Our visits paid off because the net metering bill passed, and the e-waste bill and tire efficiency bill are both well-positioned to pass in the next session.

June 3, 2008 -- Visit to the Sims Metal Management Recycling Plant

On Tuesday, June 3rd a group of NRDC NY Council members took the Path train to Sims Metal Management Recycling Plant in New Jersey to get a behind-the-scenes look at what exactly happens to the trash New York City residents throw out. Seeing first hand how New York City's trash is handled once it gets picked up curb-side was a truly eye-opening experience.

July 9, 2007 -- NYCouncil Field Trip to the Brooklyn Waterfront & the Floating Pool

On July 9th in a sweltering 95 degrees, members of NRDC's NYCouncil toured the Brooklyn Waterfront. The tour was lead by Matt Urbanski, Principal Landscape Architect for the Brooklyn Waterfront Development Project, and Mark Laska, CEO and President of Great Eastern Ecology, the ecological designers for the Park. Both Matt and Mark provided members of the Council with an 'insiders' view of the project, highlighting the environmental components of the project, describing the politics behind the scenes, giving access to abandoned piers and showing the extensive model that depicts just how massive and amazing the final product will be. The tour ended with Jonathan Kirschenfeld giving us a private after-hours viewing of the Floating Pool that recently opened. Jonathan is the Principal Architect for the Floating Pool Lady.

February 27, 2007 -- "Saving Giant Bluefin Tuna: Cutting-Edge Science Meets Fisheries Management"

Bluefin tuna are one of the largest and most lucrative fish in the sea. Their populations are in precipitous decline due to the high global demand for raw seafood, such as sushi and sashimi. From the days when legendary anglers Ernest Hemingway and Zane Grey brought notoriety to the 1000-pound tuna, or "granders," prowling Atlantic coastal waters, bluefin have become an increasingly rare prize. Stanford professor Barbara A. Block has made it her life's work to gather the scientific data that is revealing how the remaining bluefin tuna can be protected.

November 2, 2006 -- Swim For The River Documentary Film Showing and Presentation at NRDC

This documentary follows Chris Swain as he braves whitewater, sewage, snapping turtles, hydroelectric dams, homeland security patrols, factory outfalls, and PCB contamination to become the first person to swim the entire length of the Hudson River from the Adirondack Mountains to New York City. In the film, Swain's experience links together stories of the river, which begins in wilderness and ends in one of the nation's densest population centers. Along the way, he meets heroes who are fighting to protect the Hudson against a range of threats from industry, inept regulatory agencies, and public indifference. Swim For The River was produced by Moira Productions in co-sponsored by Riverkeeper.
June 6, 2006 -- NY Council at City Bakery

Many thanks to those who joined us for the June 6th NRDC New York Council event at City Bakery with NRDC President Frances Beinecke and Senior Attorney Robert Kennedy, Jr. We appreciate your interest and generosity -- we raised more than $22,000 for local efforts to stop global warming -- which helped make the night a great success. Please feel free to contact us for further information on the environmental and public health battles we face and what NRDC and our partners are doing to fight them.
